Designing Sustainable Packaging: Approaches and Solutions
Packaging serves multiple purposes: it protects products, provides essential information, supports marketing, and simplifies logistics. Sustainable packaging aims to minimize environmental impact following the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle principle. Key factors include:
- Material Choice: Recyclable, biodegradable, or renewable materials
- Packaging Volume: Avoiding overpackaging and using reusable solutions
- Production & Origin: Energy-efficient manufacturing and local sourcing
- Certifications & Labels: Proof of eco-friendliness and recyclability
- Transport Efficiency: Optimized weight and volume
Mono-materials or easily separable composites are especially sustainable as they can be fully recycled. Thinner packaging uses less material overall. The environmental performance is assessed via a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)—from raw material extraction through production, transport, use, and end-of-life disposal or recycling.
Our Steps to Ensure Recyclability
- Using mono-materials wherever possible
- Graphic information and pictograms on packaging to inform and assist consumers in recycling wherever possible
- Partnering with suppliers of recyclable foills
- Incorporating PCR (post-consumer recycled) content—for example, the usage of recycled material is already exceeding the required 30% of the PPWR in some parts. The recycling rate of our own reusable end consumer packaging reached 85% by 2024.
- 2025 projects include wax printing on a Secondary carton in place of paper labels testing alkali-soluble labels, and exploring paper-based films
