At Eisberg, “Colour Your Life,” is not just a slogan, but a core competency in action. Why? We make life more vibrant by combining healthy enjoyment with maximum freshness. The fact that both go hand in hand is shown by our impressive progress in the ultra-fresh fruits business area in Switzerland and Austria.

For us, quality isn’t a matter of chance—it’s the result of two key factors: a local presence and strong partnerships. To set the course for the coming season, our team of experts traveled in mid-February directly to the heart of European lettuce cultivation: Murcia, Spain.

Our purchasing manager Manuela, our Spanish quality management expert Juan Miguel, and our product development manager Roland got a firsthand look at the latest developments and current challenges in the field.

Between a spirit of research and high-tech

The focus of the trip was on exchanging ideas with leading seed producers. In vast experimental fields, our experts assessed new, promising lettuce varieties that could end up in our mixes in the future.

A particular highlight was the evaluation of modern hydroponic systems. These water- and resource-efficient cultivation methods are an essential building block for future-proof and sustainable production.

When the weather dictates the rules

Particularly striking—and at the same time thought-provoking—was a visit to an iceberg lettuce field: due to the weather, only about 35% of the crop was marketable. Moments like these underscore just how extreme the challenges facing our growers are, and how essential close crisis management and a deep mutual understanding between the retail sector and agriculture are.

Why do we take a close look?

For us at Eisberg, this personal commitment is indispensable. Only by understanding the conditions in the field and seeking direct dialogue with producers can we guarantee our customers the promised level of excellent quality, maximum freshness, and genuine innovation.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our partners in Spain for their transparent insights and valuable collaboration—together, we will find solutions to the challenges of tomorrow.
